Temple University basketball assistant Bill Courtney has died at 55, the school announced Tuesday, calling it a “sudden passing” and offering no further details.
At a Glance
- Courtney joined Temple in June 2025 with 30+ years of college coaching experience
- He guided Miami to the 2023 Final Four and took over as interim coach for the final 19 games last season
- Temple coach Adam Fisher called him “one of the most respected coaches in the country”
- Why it matters: A veteran mentor who elevated every program he touched is gone, leaving players and staff reeling
Courtney’s arrival in Philadelphia this summer was supposed to add decades of bench wisdom to the Owls. Instead, his tenure ended after weeks. “I am shocked and heartbroken by the tragic news and passing of my close friend Bill Courtney,” head coach Adam Fisher said. “Bill made such a big impact on our program in such a short time. He was one of the most respected coaches in the country – thoughtful, prepared and deeply committed to the game and to winning the right way.”
From Bucknell Star to Bench Leader
A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Courtney first made his name as a player, earning All-Patriot League honors at Bucknell and graduating in 1992 with a degree in education. He pivoted quickly to coaching, stockpilling more than 30 years of experience across the college ranks.

His résumé spans:
- American, Bowling Green, George Mason, Providence, Virginia, Virginia Tech and DePaul
- Cornell head coach for six seasons (2010-16)
- Miami Hurricanes assistant for five seasons, reaching the NCAA Tournament three times
Last season Courtney stepped into the spotlight when Jim Larrañaga retired, serving as Miami’s interim coach for the final 19 games.
A Final Four Memory
The 2022-23 campaign marked the pinnacle of Courtney’s career: Miami’s charge to the Final Four. American Conference Commissioner Tim Pernetti noted that Courtney “helped lead Miami to the Final Four and programs to nine postseason tournaments.”
Temple athletic director Arthur Johnson recalled the coach’s joy. “In the short time that he has been part of the Temple family, I saw the impact that he had on our program with the joy that exuded from him on and off the court,” Johnson said. “He will be missed by his immediate family, his Temple basketball family, and the greater basketball community.”
Tributes Pour In
Statements released Tuesday painted a consistent portrait: a meticulous coach who cared deeply about people.
- Fisher: “Bill made every program he touched better, and his loss is felt profoundly by everyone who knew him.”
- Johnson: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of coach Bill Courtney.”
- Pernetti: “His affect on the lives of the student-athletes and coaches who worked with him will be his ultimate legacy.”
Temple has not disclosed funeral arrangements or the cause of death. The program asked for privacy for Courtney’s family while promising to “honor his memory.”
