A head-on crash between a school bus and a passenger car in suburban Chicago Thursday morning left one person dead and sent 11 others, including students, to hospitals.
The Manhattan Fire Protection District reported the collision occurred at 8:17 a.m. CT on Manhattan Monee Road. The bus was transporting students for Manhattan School District.
Victims and Response
The bus carried 10 students and 1 driver, according to officials. Emergency crews evaluated all bus occupants at the scene and transported them to nearby hospitals “due to the severity of the accident,” the fire district stated.
Administrative staff from School District 114 joined Illinois State Police, Manhattan Police Department and multiple fire crews at the crash site.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead, Illinois State Police confirmed. No major injuries were reported among the children on the bus.
Road Closure and Investigation
Manhattan Monee Road between Schoolhouse and Cedar Roads will remain closed “until further notice” while authorities investigate, police announced.
“Please avoid the area and use alternate routes,” the fire district urged residents, promising additional information would follow.
Video and photo from the scene showed dozens of orange traffic cones and a large truck blocking the road. No further details about the crash circumstances or victim identities were released.
