Sarah L. Montgomery first walked into a Philadelphia newsroom as a Temple University intern in 2009, tasked with fact-checking a series on the city’s crumbling school infrastructure. That summer shaped everything that followed.
What She Covers
Now in her fifteenth year covering the Philadelphia region, Sarah serves as Senior Correspondent for News of Philadelphia, where she focuses on city government, housing policy, and neighborhood development. Her 2021 investigation into delayed maintenance at Philadelphia Housing Authority properties led to a citywide inspection overhaul and earned her the Pennsylvania Press Association’s Public Service Award. More recently, her ongoing coverage of the city’s efforts to address vacant properties in Kensington and Point Breeze has examined how policy decisions ripple through real communities.
Background
Before joining newsofphiladelphia.com, Sarah spent eight years at The Philadelphia Inquirer covering City Hall and three years at WHYY reporting on regional politics. She’s a graduate of Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication and completed an Investigative Reporters and Editors data journalism fellowship in 2017.
Sarah grew up in Bucks County but has lived in West Philadelphia since 2012. When she’s not chasing council members for comment, she’s usually exploring the city’s public murals with her rescue dog, a beagle mix named Walter.
