Eagles Target Fired Texans OC for Top Job

The Philadelphia Eagles have formally requested permission to interview Miami Dolphins senior passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik for their vacant offensive coordinator role, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

At a Glance

  • Slowik, 38, was Houston’s OC in 2023-24 before joining Miami in 2025
  • He helped C.J. Stroud win 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year
  • The Eagles will be hiring their fifth OC in six seasons under Nick Sirianni
  • Why it matters: Philadelphia wants an offensive evolution after parting ways with Kevin Patullo after only one year

Slowik’s star rose quickly in 2023 when the Texans ranked 12th in yards and 13th in points while Stroud took home top-rookie honors. The momentum faded last season, however; Houston’s offense regressed and Slowik was dismissed after the 2024 campaign.

He resurfaced in Miami as Mike McDaniel’s senior passing game coordinator in 2025. McDaniel himself was fired by the Dolphins earlier this month and has since emerged as a coveted head-coaching candidate.

From Defense to Offense

Slowik’s coaching journey began in Washington in 2011 under Mike Shanahan on a staff loaded with future head coaches:

  • Kyle Shanahan
  • Sean McVay
  • Matt LaFleur
  • Mike McDaniel

Initially a defensive assistant from 2011-13, Slowik switched sides of the ball after Kyle Shanahan hired him in San Francisco. He served as defensive quality control coach in 2017 before eventually becoming the 49ers’ passing game coordinator in 2022. That success led to the Texans’ offensive coordinator gig.

A Wide-Open Search

Philadelphia parted ways with Patullo following a single season. Head coach Nick Sirianni emphasized variety in his Thursday press conference.

“You’re looking to continue to evolve as an offense, and I’m looking to bring in the guy that’s going to best help us do that,” Sirianni said. “I think that there are many different ways to be successful on offense and everybody has different styles, everybody has different players, and there’s many different ways to be successful.”

Beyond Slowik, the Eagles have been linked to:

  • Brian Daboll
  • Mike Kafka
  • Jim Bob Cooter
  • Zac Robinson
  • Charlie Weis Jr.
  • Mike McDaniel

The franchise has now requested interviews with multiple candidates, signaling a thorough process before naming its next play-caller.

Key Takeaways

  1. Slowik’s 2023 success with Stroud makes him an intriguing candidate despite Houston’s 2024 decline.
  2. His experience under Kyle Shanahan and McDaniel could align with Sirianni’s desire for offensive evolution.
  3. Philadelphia’s revolving door at OC underscores the pressure to find a long-term solution.
