Eagles Lock Up Clay

Michael Clay is staying in Philadelphia.

The Eagles special teams coordinator agreed to a new contract on Sunday morning, a league source confirmed to News Of Philadelphia, ending any speculation about his departure.

Clay, 34, had been without a deal for 2026 and interviewed last week for the Buccaneers’ special teams coordinator vacancy. Instead, he will remain with the Eagles under head coach Nick Sirianni.

Coaching Roots in Philadelphia

Clay’s ties to the organization run deep. He first arrived in 2014 as a defensive quality control coach, then shifted to assistant special teams coach in 2015 under former head coach Chip Kelly. When Kelly left for San Francisco, Clay followed and spent four seasons on Kyle Shanahan’s staff before returning to Philadelphia in 2021 to take the coordinator role.

Mixed Results This Season

Special teams delivered standout moments and frustrating lapses in 2024:

  • Coverage units ranked among the league’s best
  • Punter Braden Mann posted career-high numbers
  • Defensive standouts Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter both blocked field goals
  • Kicker Jake Elliott struggled throughout the year
  • Return game finished 30th in kick return average and 14th in punt return average
  • Britain Covey’s return from injury stabilized punt returns late in the season

Next Priority: Offensive Coordinator

With Clay’s future settled, attention turns to the vacant offensive coordinator position. The Eagles removed Kevin Patullo from the role earlier this offseason and have since conducted multiple interviews. No timetable has been announced for a hire.

Clay’s retention ensures continuity on a coaching staff that has reached the playoffs in three straight seasons.
