Burglars Loot Biffle Home After Crash

Burglars broke into the North Carolina home of retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle after he and six others died in a Dec. 18 plane crash, stealing cash, guns and memorabilia, according to an incident report released by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Thieves entered Biffle’s Mooresville home sometime between Jan. 7 afternoon and Jan. 8 morning
  • A safe was opened and $30,000 in cash, a backpack, firearms and racing memorabilia were taken

The break-in was reported on January 8, one day after the home was last confirmed secure, the sheriff’s office said. Investigators believe the intruder or intruders forced entry and targeted a safe inside the residence.

Sheriff Darren Campbell said detectives are reviewing digital evidence and conducting interviews. He confirmed that the missing items include:

  • $30,000 in cash
  • A backpack listed in the incident report
  • Multiple firearms
  • Racing-related memorabilia

Campbell added that no other individuals were present when the burglary occurred and declined to release further details while the investigation continues.

The burglary came less than three weeks after the fatal crash. On December 18, a Cessna C550 business jet carrying Biffle, his wife, their two children and three additional passengers attempted to return to Statesville Regional Airport minutes after take-off. The aircraft plunged to the ground short of the runway, erupting into flames and killing everyone on board.

Federal investigators have not determined the cause of the accident. Biffle, 54, held a pilot’s license and was one of three licensed pilots aboard the flight. The National Transportation Safety Board has not said who was at the controls.

Biffle’s victories include 19 NASCAR Cup Series wins over a two-decade career that made him a fan favorite and household name in racing circles. A public memorial service for all seven crash victims is scheduled for Friday morning at a Charlotte arena.

Detectives ask anyone with information about the burglary to contact the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
