Recall Details

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall on Dec. 11, covering SKCAIHT‑branded costumes that were sold on Amazon for about $30. The garments were manufactured in China and were offered in a children’s size XL.

Product Description

The recalled outfits feature a knit, purple, strapless top adorned with white starfish and other sea‑themed embellishments. The skirt is glittery, blending blue, purple and pink fabrics. A headband with white ears, blue seashells, pink starfish and a mermaid tail accompanies the costume.

Health Concerns and Consumer Action

Officials say the costumes contain a prohibited phthalate that violates the federal phthalates ban. Phthalates, chemicals often used to soften plastics, are toxic if ingested by young children and “can cause adverse side effects,” the commission said.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled costumes and take them away from children,” the recall said. Customers are advised to cut the dress and submit a photo of the destroyed product to [email protected] to receive a refund.

About 1,300 costumes were sold on Amazon between March 2022 and July 2025, the announcement noted.

Key Takeaways

  • 1,300 child‑size mermaid and princess costumes recalled due to banned phthalates.
  • Parents must immediately stop use, remove from children, and destroy the garments.
  • Destroyed costumes can be photographed and sent to [email protected] for a refund.

The recall underscores the importance of checking for safety compliance in children’s apparel, especially when phthalates are involved. Parents should act quickly to protect their children.
